Twelfth in a new blog series I’m calling “The 12 Posts of Christmas.” I completely ran out of steam by the seventh (okay, sixth) post, but thanks to Andy Rooney, I’m keepin’ on.

Merry Christmas! I hope your holiday is full of cookies and presents and dancing santas. And love. Love is good on Christmas.

A Christmas Story

Are we all ready for the annual 24-hour A Christmas Story marathon? Here are some fun facts to keep in mind as you watch the movie this year. Be grateful Jack Nicholson was busy in 1982.

If your family is like mine, there’s probably one family member who mutters that she doesn’t understand how you can watch this movie over and over. Don’t let this get you down and cause you to resort to violence of this magnitude:

Just keep watching the movie until she lets the magic wash over her and she sits down and watches the movie with you.

Disappointments

I really, really love white chocolate covered pretzels. I really, really dislike peppermint. I went to the break room at work, saw a bag of chocolate covered pretzels on the table, and grabbed two to take back to my desk. After my first bite, I realized those were not pretty red sprinkles on the pretzels, but bits of nasty peppermint. Such a cruel joke.

Christmas Cookies

One of my very favorite things about this season is white fudge-covered Oreos. They’re kind of like the McRib of the cookie aisle, as they’re only available from late November through the end of December. If you’ve never tried these things, rush to Target and grab a box. But just one box at a time. With the limited supply, we can’t get too greedy.

Thanks for the encouragement, Andy Rooney

Seventh in a new blog series I’m calling “The 12 Posts of Christmas.” Clever, right? I’m probably the only blogger with this type of blog series this month. Actually, I’m just low on inspiration and thought it would be easy to come up with multiple posts regarding Christmas. I may, however, get bored of this before I reach 12 posts.

While writing a post about my thoughts on the correct meat for Christmas dinner, I realized that I had really, truly, run out of ideas for my Christmas blog series. Not that the posts I actually published were riveting or groundbreaking, but ham v. turkey? I was embarassed and decided to wrap up the series early.

Then we caught Andy Rooney’s segment on 60 Minutes while waiting for the Survivor finale, and he made me feel not so bad about my meat post. … Read More »

Santa Claus

Sixth in a new blog series I’m calling “The 12 Posts of Christmas.” Clever, right? I’m probably the only blogger with this type of blog series this month. Actually, I’m just low on inspiration and thought it would be easy to come up with multiple posts regarding Christmas. I may, however, get bored of this before I reach 12 posts.

I apparently posted about my favorite Christmas movies a little early. If only I’d known that I would soon be watching 1985’s Santa Claus, starring John Lithgow and the little girl from The Parent Trap 2, I would have waited.

I missed the first half of the movie, which covers Santa’s origin story, but I most definitely caught the second half. This movie had everything I never knew was necessary for a good Christmas movie, such as Dudley Moore as an elf named … Read More »

Christmas Presents

Fifth in a new blog series I’m calling “The 12 Posts of Christmas.” Clever, right? I’m probably the only blogger with this type of blog series this month. Actually, I’m just low on inspiration and thought it would be easy to come up with multiple posts regarding Christmas. I may, however, get bored of this before I reach 12 posts.

Magazines have always done gift guides in their December issues, and this year it’s been hard not to notice that every single blog I read is doing a gift guide now as well. My inner blogger thought that maybe I should also compile a gift guide, you know, to keep up with the big dogs. But then my inner realist reminded my inner blogger that while she’d let the blogger create a blog and talk about herself on it for nearly a … Read More »

Christmas Commercials

Fourth in a blog series I’m calling “The 12 Posts of Christmas.” Clever, right? I’m probably the only blogger with this type of blog series this month. I watch a fair amount of TV and that means that, even with my DVR, I watch a lot of holiday commercials. Let’s discuss some of them, shall we?

1. There are a lot of commercials that air year after year, like the stupid Hershey’s commercial with the ringing kisses, and those Lexus commercials with the ridiculous red bows. But really, I think we can all agree the quintissential Christmas commercial is Folgers’ “Peter comes home” commercial.

Christmas Movies

Third in a blog series I’m calling “The 12 Posts of Christmas.” Clever, right? I’m probably the only blogger with this type of blog series this month. Actually, I’m just low on inspiration and thought it would be easy to come up with multiple posts regarding Christmas. I may, however, get bored of this before I reach 12 posts.

When I was younger, there was a person in my life who loved Christmas movies and made a big deal out of watching them every year, particularly the old ones. I didn’t have warm feelings towards this person, and for a long time I associated the classic Christmas movies with him/her, and that was dumb. There are a lot of great Christmas movies, old and new, and they’re way too good to let one person who I don’t particularly like keep me … Read More »
